The children and their guardians, including Rhoda, were discussing about the rules in the house that children shouldn’t talk or discuss anything with anyone except for Rhoda and Milligan. After finishing their discussion, Rhoda gave the children the “surprise” or the riddle that Mr. Benetic had made to give to the children for their surprise (but sadly, Mr. Benetic was kidnapped). After their discussion and the giving of the riddle, the children went up to Constance’s room to discuss about the things that is happening and decide that they should solve the riddle and go to find Mr. Benetic themselves not with others (or else Mr. Curtain’s group will find them out). Reynie opens the riddle that Rhoda gave them awhile ago, and the riddle is a poem which makes no sense at all. Kate and Constance complain the poem is very hard to understand.
Not long after that Reynie figured it out that it should be in some of the dictionaries. The children went to search all over the house. They can do it fast from the help of sticky that he can remember most of where the dictionaries are. After they search and search there’s this guard who just speak out about the old dictionary that Mr. Benetic as using. So the children want to see that dictionary but then the guards won’t let them in the study room. So the children went back to Constance’s bedroom to find a way to get into the study room.
Then at the time, Sticky saw that Moocho is coming to visit Kate but the he is having a problem with the guards down there. While Moocho is having the problem with the guards, that buys time for the kids to go into the study room and get the dictionary. Kate wet off first and has the dictionary in her hand without anyone seeing her. They all went back to Constance’ bedroom and open the pages of the dictionary one by one. As Reynie opens the dictionary page by page, there’s a notes. As they read it, Constance figures out the riddle which is “TAKE THE SHORTCUT”. While they are thinking about what shortcut it is, Rhonda called hem down to talk to Moocho. After they have talked to Moocho, they came back to Constance’s bedroom and think about the shortcut.
At that moment, Sticky remembers the article in the newspaper about the cargo ship…MV shortcut. The kids need to head to the dock. So then they use the chute from Kate and Reynie writes note to the guardians and Rhoda. The kids took the bus to the dock. There’s this guy in the dock that named Canonball. He welcomed them and led them to the ship. After the kids meet the captain, Cannonball offer them a tour. The kids tour around the ship for a long time.
